Top 5 Largest Tomato Producing Countries

Tomato is one of the most widely consumed edible commodities in the world. Tomato is considered as fruit as well as vegetable. Tomato is mostly found in red color but sometimes green tomatoes are also seen in different regions but as whole species originated in the South American Andes and its edible commodity started in Mexico. It has wide varieties that are widely grown in the greenhouses and in the cooler climate environment. Heirloom tomatoes are becoming most popular, particularly among home gardeners and organic producer. It is used as raw ingredients in, ketchup sauces, drinks, salads and it is the main ingredient of many other dishes. Almost 161.8 million tonnes of tomatoes were produced in the world in 2012. China is the largest producer it is almost one quarter of the global output. Here we are listing top 5 tomato producing countries.



China is the number one country in tomato production. China’s tomato products are mostly exported to Russia and Japan.Fresh and dried tomatoes as well as tomato powder, lycopene powder, oil and canned tomatoes are also exported from China. Currently China has around 166 tomato sauce processing factories.


India is the world’s second largest grower of tomatoes and producing nearly 12 million tonnes. Andhra Pradesh producing approximately 35 percent of the country’s production followed by Karnataka, Orissa, West Bengal, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, and Jharkhand. The most common tomato varities in India are beefsteak, cherry, heirloom, roma and pear.

United States

The United States of America is one of the world’s largest tomato producers. Almost all tomatoes grown for processing are produced under contract between growers and processing firms and fresh tomatoes are sold largely on the open market. California is number one in world in the production of processing tomatoes.  They export tomatoes in Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, and Italy.


Turkey is one of the leading tomato producers in the world and has been raising tomato production year by year. Turkey ranks fourth in world tomato production and  it is behind in China, USA and India. Turkish exports reach almost 1.2 mln tons annually. Turkey has 25,000 acres of tomatoes in greenhouses. There are more than 4 million tomato producers in Turkey.


Egypt is also one of the top tomato producers in the world and the country ranked 5th in the world with they produced 9.2 MT of tomatoes. Tomatoes are produced on more than 200,000 hectares in Egypt. Most producers were growing table tomatoes, that will not transport well and contain too much water to be used for tomato paste and also other processed products.
